Definition of bats

  • The second-most prevalent group of mammals on the globe, with more than 1,100 species, are bats. The world's bat population is one out of every five mammal species!
  • With the exception of the Arctic, Antarctica, and a few remote islands, bats are found practically everywhere.
  • They may be seen on the underside of bridges, but they typically roost in caves, historic structures, or trees. Since bats are mammals, they have warm-blooded bodies, fur, and a milk-fed infant diet.
  • Because they are nocturnal, bats are active at night.

Types of bats

Microbats

Megabats

The tiniest sort of bats is called microbats, and they range in size from the Bumblebee bat, which is less than 2 inches long at 4 cm, to the spectral bat, which is up to a meter long and has a 13 cm length.

Echolocation is used by microbats.

Although they have excellent vision, bats can fly into entirely dark spaces, such as deep caverns, where it is hard to navigate by sight. Finding flying insects in the dark is challenging even when there is sufficient light.

some, like Although the Mauritian tomb bat, may only reach a length of 6 cm or 2.5 inches, the enormous golden crowned flying fox may have a wingspan as high as 1.7 meters or 5.6 feet. Megabats are typically larger than microbats.

Because they consume fruit or nectar, megabats are often known as fruit bats.

Due to the fact that most megabats do not employ echolocation, their ears are substantially smaller than their skulls in comparison to those of microbats.

Compared to microbats, megabats have a far stronger sense of smell.

Vampire bats

The term "vampire bats" refers to bats that consume blood, yet there is no need to be afraid of these little animals. Two of the vampire bat species, which are native to Mexico and South America, prefer to consume the blood of birds, while the third prefers to consume the blood of cattle. Even if they might occasionally consume human blood.

Comparison between bird wings and bat wings

Bat wings

Bird wings

Bat wings resemble long-fingered hands. The surface of the wings is made up of thin, leathery skin that has been stretched between the fingers.

Bats can change direction more quickly than birds because of the greater range of motion in their wings, which makes it simpler for them to catch prey.

Like the human arm, a bird's wing has three componentsà the upper arm, forearm, and hand, as well as three jointsà the shoulder, elbow, and wrist.

There are three types of flying feathers: primary flight feathers, secondary flight feathers, and coverts.

How can bats see in the dark

  • Echolocation is similar to the sonar that ships and submarines use to locate underwater objects. Bats produce tiny, inaudible noises while they fly that are too high for humans to hear. The bat's sound is reflected away from it. They will echo or bounce back if they make contact with an object. The bats can tell what is in front of them from the shape of the echo. This explains why in the dark, bats don't collide with objects.
