Facts about owls

  • Owls have incredibly long legs hidden by their plump bodies. The full length of an owl’s legs can’t usually be seen unless its body is lifted higher or when its legs drop down during flight.
  • Owls hoot to communicate with other owls, but studies have shown that they also do so to stake out their territory and alert neighbors to their presence.
  • Owls have around 14 vertebrates in their neck (Double the number of vertebrates in humans and other birds). Due to the additional neck vertebrae, owls have a greater range of motion and can spin their heads 270 degrees.
  • The hue of an owl's eyes reveals its preferred hunting times:
  1. Owls with a dark brown eye color are nocturnal (meaning they go hunting throughout the night).
  2. Owls with orange eyes actively hunt during twilight.
  3. Owls with yellow eyes are diurnal (meaning they go hunting throughout the day).
  4. Owls have the best night vision compared to any other animal on earth. (The night eagle).
  • The earliest known representation of an owl dates back 30,000 years.
  • The depiction of a long-eared owl etched onto the Chauvet cave in France is the first instance of owls appearing in artwork. Separate from the first chamber segment, the piece was discovered in the second cave area.
  • The most distinguishing feature of an owl is its huge eyes, which are in addition to its distinctive hoot. The majority of an owl's skull is occupied by its eyes, as would be expected. Compared to males of the same species, female owls often have larger, heavier eyes. A Great Horned owl's eyes weigh about 25.7 grams collectively, which is comparable to the weight of a golf ball.
  • Barn owls (which have heart-shaped faces) don't hoot like other owl species. These owls are known to scream in order to communicate with one another. Additionally, barn owls hiss at predators and intruders who try to disturb their nest.
  • Oscar Paulino Arredondo de la Mata unearthed the remains of the Ornimegalonyx in Cuba in 1954, making it the largest owl ever found. This owl is the biggest ever seen, measuring 1.1 meters.
  • A barn owl consumes 1,000 mice annually on average at the rate of 12 mice per night. Barn owls are frequently used as a method of pest management against small insects and animals like mice.
  • Small mammals are completely and entire swallowed by owls while they are on the prowl.
  • The Elf Owl is the tiniest owl in existence, measuring five inches. Only little insects and spiders are the primary prey of this owl species. Southern Arizona's forests and desert cactus ecosystems are where elf owls generally call home.
  • Owls can swim.
  • An owl's face disc enables it to direct sounds from its prey to its ears.
  • Owls have two stomachs; The first is referred to as the glandular stomach, which creates the bodily acids and mucus to assist the owl in distinguishing between the pieces of its prey that can be digested and those that cannot. The owl vomits out other indigestible byproducts, such as its prey's bones and fur, after digesting its prey whole.
  • Owls feed their strongest children first.
  • The male owl usually goes on hunts for food to bring back to the nest where he will feed his offspring. The female will also rip up their prey into little pieces and give it to their young.
  • Owls' eyes cannot move inside their sockets, unlike humans and other animals.
  • Instead, in order to perceive their surroundings, individuals must flip their heads upside down or sideways.
  • A group of owls is called (parliament, congress, flock or state).
  • Owls don't construct their nests. More frequently, owls will use a different bird's nest that was already there to deposit its eggs. In order to create the nest stronger and softer for the eggs, the female owl would also use trash fragments and other items.
  • At least once every year, owls shed their feathers.
  • Owls have three eyelids:
  1. When one blinks, the top eyelid descends.
  2. When the owl is sleeping, the lower eyelid is closed.
  3. The nictitating membrane, or third eyelid, keeps the eye moist and shields it from dust.
  • The great horned owls can quickly crush and eat its prey with tremendous force due to their talons have a clamping force of around 300 pounds per square inch. If you have trouble visualizing that, consider that this force is equivalent to the strongest human bite.
