What are ostriches?

  • Ostriches are the largest and the fastest warm-blooded birds in the world from the family struthionidae.

  • They have long neck, massive thigh muscles, stable leg joints, elastic tendons and long, lean legs.

  • They can’t fly but they run very fast at a rate of 70 km per hour because their joints are flexible.

  • In comparison to humans, they employ tendons to store and release twice as much elastic energy per step.

Facts about ostriches

  • Ostriches can run more easily because they only have two toes on each foot, and the larger inner toe's huge nail resembles a horse's hoof.
  • When in danger, ostriches flee. When running, ostriches use their wings as rudders to help them shift course.
  • They walk on tiptoes because each of their two-toed feet has what is effectively a snaggle claw, which helps them drive themselves ahead (an extra-large talon that gives them great traction).
  • Although they can be lethal weapons capable of killing a person or a prospective predator like a lion with a forward kick, their extremely long legs are not.
  • Ostriches primarily consume the roots and seeds of plants, but they will also consume any insects, lizards, or other accessible animals.

  • Of all land animals, the ostrich has the biggest eyes. Those big eyes are bigger than ostrich brain. The lashes around ostrich eyes are lengthy and luscious. But they're not hair. They are made of short, simple feathers that shield the bird's eyes from the sun and shield them from sand that may fly.

  • They may reach heights of up to 2.5 meters and can weigh more than 150 kilos at times, making them the largest living bird species on planet.

  • When it's too hot, they have their untidy body feathers, which may not be as sleek as other birds' aerodynamic coats, but the fluffiness helps the birds stay cool (Ostriches can fan out these loose feathers, airing out their skin).

  • They DON'T bury their heads in the sand when they are afraid.

  • Ostriches are sometimes known as camel birds because, in addition to sharing a long neck and large eyes like camels, they can also survive without water as long as they have access to plants.

  • Savannas, plains, and sparsely wooded areas are home to ostriches.

  • Ostriches may congregate in sizable flocks with more than 100 members during dry seasons.

  • The only known live bird with only two toes per foot is the ostrich.

  • The largest eggs produced by any mammal are laid by ostriches (Equates to about 24 chicken eggs).

  • Ostriches are herd animals.

  • The females will all lay their eggs in a communal nest if the male and females decide to procreate. The community nest may hold 50 eggs, which the females incubate throughout the day. Each female may lay up to 10 eggs, and there can be up to 5 females in a group. The male takes up incubation responsibilities at night.

  • The development of ostrich chicks takes roughly 40 days. At around two to four years old, the young are ready to start reproducing, and they may live for more than 40 years.

Ostriches are endangered

  • There are now just two species of ostrich known, and they are found in central and southern Africa.

  • Although they used to have a larger range that spanned parts of southern Asia, these birds were heavily hunted for their feathers, which were used in clothing.

  • Only in Africa are ostriches found in the wild.

  • The ostrich is raised all over the world, especially for its ornamental feathers. It is also raised for its flesh, which is sold commercially, and for its skin, which is used to make leather goods.

How to differentiate between male & female ostrich?

  • The color of an adult ostrich's feathers can be used to distinguish it from a female:
  1. The boys have brilliant white feathers and are black.
  2. The girls are feathery greyish brown.
